Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) is a digital printing technology that eliminates many of the challenges of analogue printing solutions such as hot stamp/hot foil and roller coders.

The brilliance behind Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) is in the printhead that produces a high resolution output. The printhead is made up of a series of miniature print elements under a ceramic coating, while the ribbon is covered with a specially-formulated coloured wax and resin mixture. As the elements heat small areas of the ribbon, the mixture melts and is transferred to the substrate surface, where it adheres as the surface moves under the printer. Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) thus brings digital printing technology to flexible film packaging applications, common in the food industry.

As coding requirements change due customer or industry demands, analogue technologies have limited flexibility due to the constraints of the number of characters held in the type holder or the amount of text that can be added to the circumference of the die wheel. Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) technology is simply not constrained in the same way due to its digital nature. Additional code content, including more lines of code and new date, time, or traceability data, can easily be added without any mechanical changes to the printer itself.

Thermal Transfer Overprinting (TTO) offers another advantage over traditional hot stamp technology that require warm up periods, whilst TTO technology can be online within 60 seconds from start up. LINX Thermal Transfer Overprinters provide increased uptime, low cost of ownership and ease of use printers to the market. This offers industrial operators greater efficiency, reliability and ease of use, increasing production uptime and allowing greater throughput on the production line.
